Charlestown st austell Trade
in the early 18th century china clay
was found in Cornwall.
Charles Rashleigh saw that
the expansion of the mining industry
around West Polmear which provided
the need for a harbour on the coast.
In 1791 construction on Rashleigh's
harbour started. Seven years later
the spectacular Cornish harbour was
completed. The harbour was used
to transport copper and china clay
throughout the world.
it was the only shipping outlet
for the St Austell area as the roads
were inadequate to serve the copper
and china clay Trade.
In the year of 1876 Charlestown
shipped over 34,000 tons of clay
the port represents a rare
example of a mineral port
and is one of the best preserved
china clay and copper ore ports
of it's period anywhere in the world.
Today the harbour is still busy with
regular visits from tall ships
and film producers.
